The flow chart above shows the interactions that we model in our simulation.

Interaction of Cast of Characters

The simulation depicts a cascade of effects leading to degeneration of a block of neuronal tissue. The pathology begins with an initial site of soluble Amyloid-Beta production in otherwise healthy neuronal tissue. The arrival of glial cells (microglia and astrocytes) and the inflammatory chemicals that they produce lead to neuronal stress and, ultimately, neuronal death. Fibrous deposits of amyloid, typical of senile plaques, form in the tissue during this process.
