Both English and German are inadequate.
The biographical assertions are largely unverifiable.
In fact, although it is often asserted without
hesitation that Euclid lived in Alexandria,
there is no solid evidence for it.
Nor for the dates often assigned to him.
If he did work in Alexandria, then there is
an early limit to when he lived,
because Alexandria was founded from scratch in 330 B.C.
All the rest of the "facts" come from later gossip.
All we can say is that these speculations do fit in well with what
else we know about Greek mathematics of that time.
One thing supicious about the claim
of Euclid's residence is that there is
no specific tradition of his working with
other slightly younger mathematicians
who we know to have lived there.
