Post-doctoral fellows
Guodong Gai, Department of Mathematics
Guodong obtained his PhD from Commissariat À l'Énergie Atomique et Alternative, in cooperation with Université de Rouen Normandie in Rouen, France. His PhD work focused on several computational fluid dynamics problems submerged in nuclear accidental accidental scenarios, such as: hydrogen combustion, shock waves and droplet-induced turbulence. From industrial applications to fundamental CFD studies, he joined the group in February 2021 working on interactions between laminar flow and Platonic solids. His main current project is the flow of deformable capsules with applications to biomedical engineering.
PhD students
Layal Jbara, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering
Layal graduated her BEN at the American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon and her MASc in ChE at Queen's University, Kingston, Canada. Her background spans the following: transport phenomena, fluid dynamics and mathematical modelling. For her Masters thesis, Layal worked on the mathematical modelling of the rheological behaviour of viscoelastic material under large oscillatory shear using molecular theory. She joined UBC in September and her PhD research project revolves around the computation and physical analysis of flows laden with rigid particles and deformable capsules with applications to biological fluid flows.
Joao Pedro Cunha, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering
João Pedro Cunha graduated his Bachelor degree and Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro. For his MASc thesis project, João investigated the persistence of strain in the four-roll mill in order to describe emulsions stability. He officially joined UBC in September 2021. His PhD research project aims to compute flows laden with freely moving particles and the flow through a porous medium modeled as fixed beds of rigid particles in various conditions.
Alireza Yazdani, Department of Mathematics
Alireza started his Ph.D. in mathematics at UBC in September 2021, following his graduation with M.Sc. in mathematics at Simon Fraser University, BC, Canada. His Ph.D. studies are intended to aim at parallel computing of granular dynamics using the discrete element method on GPU. In his M.Sc., he worked on domain decomposition algorithms, especially Schwarz, for modeling large-scale phenomena that occur on surfaces.
