Organizer MITACS
Title MITACS information session
Abstract MITACS (Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems) is a Canadian institute that, since 1999, has played a leadership role in linking businesses, government and not-for-profits with university researchers. MITACS funds mathematical sciences research projects throughout the country, focusing on five key economic sectors: biomedical and health; environment & natural resources; information processing; risk & finance; and communication, networks & security. MITACS programs also focus on developing the up-and-coming generation of Canadian researchers through skills enhancement workshops, technical training events, graduate and post-doctoral internships and math outreach activities. These activities have grown over the years and form an important and successful part of applied mathematics research in Canada.

In this session, Dr. Laurence Meadows (Director, MITACS Business Development) and Dr. Nilima Nigam (MITACS Associate Scientific Director), will provide information on MITACS and its various funding programs for faculty, students, and postdocs. Dr. Meadows will focus in particular on the industrial internship program as a good introduction to MITACS work in fostering industrial collaboration. Plenty of time will be left for discussion and questions.

Although MITACS is based in Canada and some of the presentation will be of most interest to Canadian scientists, most of this session will be of interest to scientists from all countries who are interested in developing industrial partnerships. In particular, MITACS is playing a key role in forming international networks of math experts to address global issues (China, India, France, Germany, Australia, among others).

Thanks to generous sponsorship from MITACS, box lunches will be provided for participants.
