The instructor for the course is me, Ben Williams

This is an introduction to topology, the aim of which is to introduce topological spaces, continuous functions, the fundamental group and covering spaces.

The class meets MWF at 12pm in GEOG 242.

There is an office hour every Friday after I get back from class in MATX 1205.

This course does not have a set textbook. Instead, course notes are available. These notes may be updated as the term progresses.

For a number of years, this course had Topology, 2nd Edition by Munkres as a textbook. It covers a lot of what this course will cover.

Other books that cover some of the material of this course include

- General Topology by John L. Kelley
- Introduction to Topology by Burt Mendelson
- Algebraic Topology by Alan Hatcher. This book is freely available online. Chapter 1 covers the material on the fundamental group and covering spaces. It is quite advanced compared to Munkres.

The book Counterexamples in Topology by Lynn Steen and J. Arthur Steenbach is also relevant to the course and is often amusing.

This course involves some elementary category theory. Here are some references for that material:

- Conceptual Mathematics by F. Williams Lawvere and Stephen H. Schanuel.
- Selected chapters of Algebra by Serge Lang contain a gentle introduction to category theory. The emphasis there is on algebraic categories.
- The book Categories for the Working Mathematician by Saunders Mac Lane is a standard reference.

Homework will assigned every week and will be due by submission on
Canvas every Monday by 11:59pm, starting on 19 September. Submission in the form of a PDF produced using LaTeX is strongly encouraged.

Grades will be composed of 30% homework score, 20% midterm score and 50% final exam score.
